Knossos and the Heraklion Museum: How to Plan the Perfect Minoan Day
The site shows the palace reconstructed in place; the museum holds the real frescoes and treasures. Here's how to pair them.
Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum are two halves of one story. The palace shows you the architecture, reconstructed where it stood; the museum, 5 km away in town, holds the original frescoes and the great Minoan treasures. Doing both — in either order — is the most rewarding way to spend a Minoan day on Crete.
Why see both
When Arthur Evans excavated Knossos he moved the fragile original frescoes — the Bull-Leaping fresco, the Prince of the Lilies, the dolphins, the ladies-in-blue — into the museum for safekeeping, leaving faithful reproductions on site. So the palace gives you the spaces and the scale; the museum gives you the real, astonishingly modern-looking art and objects, including the snake goddesses, the bull's-head rhyton and the still-undeciphered Phaistos Disc. One without the other tells only half the tale.
The best order and timing
In summer, do the open-air site early — at opening, before the heat and the coaches — then retreat to the air-conditioned museum in the hot middle of the day. In cooler months the order matters less; some prefer the museum first to learn the story, then the site to walk it. Either way, allow about 1.5–2 hours at the site and 1.5–2 hours at the museum, with a relaxed lunch in Heraklion between.
Your Knossos ticket is reserved for the date you choose, so it slots easily around the museum and the heat of the day.
Getting between them
The two sit about 5 km apart, linked by the number 2 city bus that runs between central Heraklion and the Knossos terminus, or a 15-minute taxi. The museum is in the heart of Heraklion, an easy walk from the harbour and the old town, so it folds naturally into a day that starts or ends with a wander through the city.
Frequently asked
Can I see Knossos and the museum in one day?
Easily. Most visitors do the site in the morning and the museum in the afternoon, or the reverse — both fit comfortably in a day with lunch between.
Is the museum included in my Knossos ticket?
No — they're separate. Your Knossos ticket covers the site; the Heraklion Archaeological Museum is its own ticket.
Which should I do first?
In summer, the open-air site early to beat heat and crowds, then the cool museum at midday. In winter, either order works.
How do I travel between them?
The number 2 bus links central Heraklion and Knossos, about 20 minutes; a taxi takes around 15.
