The Best Time to Visit Knossos: A Month-by-Month Guide
Crete's seasons, the daily crowd-and-heat rhythm, and the exact hours that give you the palace in soft light and without the coach groups.
Knossos is open every day of the year, so the real question is when the light is kindest, the heat bearable and the courtyards quietest. It is the most-visited site on Crete, and summer middays bring both fierce sun and the Heraklion coaches. Here is how the palace feels through the seasons and across a single day, so you can choose your date well.
Season by season
Late spring (April–May) and autumn (late September–October) are the sweet spot: warm but not punishing, wildflowers or soft light, and fewer crowds than the July–August peak. High summer is hot — often well into the 30s°C — with little shade on site and the busiest coach and cruise traffic. Winter (November–March) is mild, green and quiet, with shorter opening hours but the calmest visit of the year.
Whatever the month, the site's daily hours follow the season — longer in summer, shorter in winter — with last entry about 30 minutes before closing, so check the day's hours before you set out.
The best hours of the day
Arrive right at opening or in the last two hours before closing. Both dodge the late-morning-to-early-afternoon wave when Heraklion day-trippers, coaches and cruise groups overlap, and both give you cooler air and lower, kinder light across the reconstructed halls. Midday in summer is the hottest, busiest and least rewarding time to walk an open, shadeless site.
Because your ticket is reserved for the date you choose with no fixed time slot, you can simply turn up at the cool, quiet end of your chosen day.
Beating the heat and the crowds
Knossos has very little shade, so in summer treat sun and water as seriously as the history: hat, sunscreen, refillable water, and sturdy shoes for the gypsum steps and gravel. Pairing the site with the air-conditioned Heraklion Archaeological Museum — ideally the site early and the museum in the hot middle of the day — makes for a comfortable, complete Minoan day.
Frequently asked
Is Knossos ever closed?
It's open every day of the year. Only the daily hours change with the season — longer in summer, shorter in winter, with last entry about 30 minutes before closing.
What's the quietest time to visit?
Right at opening or the final two hours of the afternoon, and outside the July–August peak. Spring and autumn weekdays are ideal.
How hot does it get in summer?
High summer regularly reaches the mid-30s°C with little shade on site, so come early or late and bring sun protection and water.
Does a dated ticket let me choose the day?
Yes. You pick your date when you book and we reserve your entry for that day, with no fixed time slot — so you can wait for cooler, quieter conditions.
